Polygon Wood was part of the larger Battle of Passchendaele or the Third Battle of Ypres and was an allied victory. However soon after rain set in and turned the battlefield into a sea of sucking mud, hampering all movement at the front. Haig’s decision to continue the fighting during the poor weather meant Passchendaele would be known for men drowning and dying in seas of mud rather than the string of victories that preceeded it.
